Special Session on

"Soft Computing in Medical Imaging"

Nowadays medical imaging provides major aid in many branches of medicine and enables and facilitates the capture, transmission and analysis of medical images as well as provides assistance towards medical diagnoses. Medical imaging is still on the rise with new imaging modalities being added and continuous improvements of devices' capabilities. Recently, computational intelligence techniques (such as neural networks or evolutionary algorithms) have been employed in various applications in the area of medical imaging. Approaches based on computational intelligence have been shown to be advantageous compared to classical approaches, in particular when classical solutions are hard or impossible to formulate and analyse. The Medical Imaging special session, held in conjunction with the IEEE World Congress in Computational Intelligence 2010, is envisaged as a compilation of the latest trends and developments in the field.

Special Session on

"Image Characterization and Feature Extraction"

Our aim is to cover the application of fuzzy logic, neural computing, evolutionary computation in the field of Image processing, more concretely on the scope of Feature Characterization (shape, color, textures, segmentation, clustering, illumination models,…). The use of soft computing, fuzzy logic, neural computing and evolutionary computation, techniques to solve image processing problems is an every day more consolidated research line. The aim of this special session is to bring together researchers which solve real-world problems related to color, shape, texture and other features extraction, modelling, measuring, etc. using the above mentioned techniques. It will make possible to highlight the recent successes in solving image problems by soft computing techniques, offering to the researchers a chance to exchange ideas, discuss recent advances and identify new promising research directions, applying this technology to solve real-world problems. It will cover a range of domains, from the more traditional ones like segmentation, contour detection, snake models or clustering; to the latest applications on realistic image synthesis, 3D features rendering or physic characteristics modelling like illumination models.

"Computational Intelligence for Activity Recognition from Sensed Data"

For those of you who sent us a tentative title, now is the time to get the paper ready. For those who didn't already notify us, please consider submitting to this special session. This special session will highlight significant recent developments in activity recognition from sensed data using computational intelligence techniques. Applications range from surveillance for homeland security to health assessment using passive and/or active sensors, i.e. video, sound, motion, RFID tags, etc. Equal importance is given to ALL stages in activity recognition, such as change detection, object extraction, representation, tracking, activity modeling, recognition, health assessment, trend analysis, etc.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to

  • New approaches to activity representation and recognition
  • Information aggregation in homogenous sensor networks (e.g. video)
  • Information aggregation in heterogeneous sensor networks (e.g. video and sound)

Special Session on

"Multimedia Information Retrieval"

Nowadays, a large and continuously growing amount of multimedia information is available in databases and in the web. Therefore, it is crucial for multimedia search engines to overcome (1) users' difficulty in specifying their information requirements, (2) the problem of extracting relevant (semantic) features from the multimedia objects, and (3) the difficulties of accurate matching and relevance feedback. We believe that Computational Intelligence with its large panel of techniques provides tools of predilection for addressing such an inherently complex challenge. The special session will provide a forum for exchanging ideas between original theoretical research contributions and effective system design and implementation. The target audience is university researchers, scientists, industry professionals, software engineers and graduate students who need to become acquainted with (or share) new theories and technologies in computational intelligence and multimedia information retrieval.

"Motion Analysis"

Although extensively studied, motion remains one of the most challenging Computer Vision areas. Over the last years there has been significant advancement in the research of the use of soft computing techniques in computer vision (or image processing), used as a way to cope with the many difficulties present in those areas, and often used along with existing classical techniques, resulting in stronger hybrid approaches. Motion (and motion analysis) is a complex task with present uncertainty by nature. Dealing with such complexity and uncertainty requires different and innovative approaches. This special session focuses on the state of the art of the developments in the area of motion analysis and especially in the use of soft computing techniques in this area. Submissions are invited on any topic related to the use of computational intelligence in motion analysis, namely to the use of fuzzy set theory, fuzzy logic and its extensions, neural computing, and machine learning in this area.

"Linguistic Description of Visual Information"

The ability to describe by means of linguistic expressions the content of images is characteristic of human beings, in contrast with the numerical features employed by computers. In order to improve the communication between humans and computers, it is necessary to provide knowledge representation models and mathematical tools able to capture and express the semantics of linguistic descriptors. This is a fundamental basis for the development of applications based on linguistic description and linguistic interaction with visual information.

Computational intelligence provides most suitable tools in order to fill the gap between the description of visual information by humans and machines. The objective of the special session is to provide a forum for the exposition and discussion of the most recent developments in the topic of linguistic description of visual information by means of computational intelligence techniques.

The main objective of this special session is to present some of the latter developments in the research about using Computational Intelligence techniques for Computer Vision. Nowadays, the field of computer vision has numerous commercial, scientific and industrial applications. In order to cope with the variety of computer vision challenges, several techniques have been introduced and developed, quite often with great success. Among the different techniques that are currently in use, we also encounter Computational Intelligence techniques. Computational Intelligence (Soft Computing) is an emerging field that consists of complementary elements of fuzzy logic, neural computing, evolutionary computation, machine learning and probabilistic reasoning.

This special session aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners working in the field of computer vision using elements of Computational Intelligence.

The use of Soft Computing, Fuzzy Logic, Neural Computing and Evolutionary Computation techniques to solve graphics problems is an emerging research line. Other techniques more widely used in the area continue presenting new and important advances.


The aim of this special session of the IEEE WCCI 2010 conference is to bring together researchers which use the above mentioned techniques to solve real-world problems related to graphic models generation in the field of Graphic Models Generation, including Geometry, Texture and Colour, for 3D and 2D Models.


It will be an unique forum to highlight the related recent successes, offering to the researchers a chance to exchange ideas, discuss recent advances and identify new promising research directions, applying this technology to solve real-world problems.
